Reed’s Grocery Store Burns

On February 23, 1949 the night manager of the Shippen Hotel noticed a glow in the front windows of the lobby, upon further investigation he noticed a fire in Reed’s Grocery Store, 80 West Kings Street and turned in the alarm for local firefighters at 10:30 p.m. Firemen were on the scene quickly and had the blaze under control in short order but not before fire, heat and smoke damaged most of the goods in the store. A damage estimate was not available. The Vigilant Hose and Cumberland Valley Hose companies battled the blaze.

Hey B.M.

That was your big boss,(the Mayor)parents store. Ted and Jane Reed owned the store. Best place in town to get the original Bryers Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. It was a real hot spot on Sunday Mornings.

I didn't put the two together, I knew the Mayor lived just down the street from the Vigilants. We have talked about it before, him watching the rigs leave and M. Garfield Barbour. Thanks CW, and bring us some warm weather soon.

Just so you get it right. The Reeds' lived at 210 East Burd Street. We lived next door at 212 East Burd Street.

Approching 90 degrees here in the Florida Keys.

I knew it was hot their after speaking with the in-laws, I am ready to be able to enjoy that kink of weather year round. I did not know exactly where the boss lived, just the stories he has relayed to me while at work.
