Frick Building Burns In Waynesboro

On November 19, 1988 at 6:03 a.m. firefighters were dispatched to the 300 block West Main Street Waynesboro, Frick Company for a building fire. An arson fire destroyed the main office building and a storage building. More than 250 firefighters manning more than 70 pieces of fire apparatus from over 25 companies and two states battled the nine-alarm blaze. By early afternoon the blaze was under control and at 2:30 p.m. some units were sent home. Many units remained on the scene until 10:30 p.m. with one crew staying until Sunday morning to check for hot spots. After the first alarm was sounded at 6:03 additional alarms were requested at 6:50, 7:21, 9:14, 10:04, 10:26, 11:11, 12:06 and 12:45. Damages were estimated at over $3,000,000. One firefighter was injured. It was said that this was the larges fire to ever occur in Waynesboro. Water was used from hydrants until about 10:00 a.m. when the water supply in reserve dropped to 75,000. At that time tankers were requested to run a shuttle. Draft sites were set up at three locations to supply the fire ground. The Cumberland Valley Hose and West End Fire and Rescue Companies assisted at the scene. The Vigilant Hose Company transferred and engine during the incident.

I remember this one. Was the first major incident after my departure for the midwest. Remember getting several telephone calls from the boys letting me know what I missed!!!!

Brad,

Who's white scope is that?

Woody,

The aerialscope you see on the A/D corner is CV Hose Co. # 53 of Ship. The stick you see next to is Hagerstown City Truck 1. The only reason someone young like me knows this was bacause I just watched a video on this fire about 2 weeks ago with my old man. There were 3 Trucks on Side A and 2 Trucks on Side C. Tower 2, City Truck 1 and Truck 53 on the A side and Wash. Co Truck 27 and Chambersburg Truck 1 on Side C. Correct me if I'm wrong Brad on the trucks.

Woody what lil'dale said is correct. The scope is really cream with bronze stripes. It was the CV's second truck over the years and was a retired FDNY 117 (Wolfen). It had the distinction of being the busiest truck in NY a few years running. The CV's kept the name Wolfen. It was replaced with the E-One you can find pictured on this site.

lil' dale, the side #1 trucks are correct as you listed them. I have the video but have not watched it for some time, so I can not comment on the rest. I do think one of my photos shows Long Meadows truck in the rear, they are not 27 are they? The paper accounts say that six ladder trucks worked the job, but they do not list who they were.

You didn't miss anything Jeff there is always another fire.

Yes Long Meadow is 27. I believe if my memory serves me right this early in the morning it was a slime lime open cab seagrave.

Other than what I have, these two photos and a couple of others and a video that last about one to two hours I would assume you could check with the Waynesboro Fire Department.

I was onsite that morning. While the storage building was burning, before the fire got to the offices, we made endless trips into the offices collecting whole file drawers of records and stacked them up in the parking lot. Within 24 hours, Frick was back up and running from rented office trailers setup all over the parking lot. Corporate leadership did an amazing job through this disaster.
