Seasonal Home Burns To The Ground

On June 3, 1979 at 11:04 a.m. firefighters were dispatched to a house fire in the area of Cleversburg (sorry a better address was not given, I remember the call but can’t remember the road it was on). When Chief Myers arrived on the scene the building had already burnt to the ground and was only smoldering at the time. Chief Myers held one engine and tanker from the Viggies and placed all other units available. The seasonal home burnt sometime between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. but was never reported. A damage estimate was not available. The Vigilant Hose and South Newton Twp. fire companies responded.

Was this Strohm's cabin on Whitmer just south of Walnut Dale? I Have some pictures of the aftermath of that one.

Brad, I'm with Haney. I tried to comment yesterday but apparently it didn't take. But, in todays numbering system it would be in the 200 block of Witmer on the odd side.

Yes it was the Edgar Strohm cabin, and now that you said Whitmer Rd. I remember that being correct. After living here for over 15 years some of those roads slip my memory.

I am not sure but this may have been the call that I was riding the seat of the tanker with Dr. Rea on the tailboard. We stopped at a stop sign and he thought we were there, left go of the bar and we drove away. When we arrived and realized he was not on board Dad sent us back to look for him. If not this call one simular in the same general area. We had a number of these over the years.

That was the same intersection, I believe, that we lost Reverand Cunningham from the tail step. But that was a different call a couple years later.

Kevin, you are right. I talked with Kenny on a run yesterday and when he mentioned the Rev. I told him I had a couple of calls running together. I was on the tanker when we lost the Rev., we lost Dr. Rea right in front of the firehouse when he fell from a tailboard.

I can't remember everything, I don't even know what day it is and often forget the year. That's okay, when I retire I won't need to know any of that stuff.

I must say after taking in the run on Britton Rd. yesterday I was a little disapointed in the Deputy and the WMIT for not having their vest on and setting a better example. I had mine on and was seen by all, LOL.
