On March 1, 1980 at 5:07 a.m. firefighters responded to a building fire on North Washington Street at the Shippensburg Woolen Mill. Heat tape wrapped around water pipes in the building caused a fire that did heavy damage to a 120 by 45 foot 2-½-story frame building. Over 100 firefighters battled the two-alarm fire that caused $100,000 in damage in the bitter cold. One firefighter, Larry Kerns was treated at Chambersburg Hospital for heat and smoke exhaustion. The Vigilant Hose, Cumberland Valley Hose, West End Fire and Rescue, Newburg-Hopewell, Fayetteville and Goodwill (Carlisle) fire companies battled the blaze.

Woolen Mill Heavily Damaged By Fire

What a fire I do remember this one. The guy hanging out the window is D Byers and the little guy standing on the landing of the second floor is D Rhinehart.

Yes I was Woody, I arrived with my father around the same time as the first in rig. Streched a line to a window on the 2/1 corner and Dad shoved me in.
A long night during a three or four month time frame when we were going to fires and arson jobs all over the place, many big buildings. We had people showing up from other parts of the county wanting to sleep in and ride. Bunkrooms were filled and cots were set up for the overflow. They never did catch who ever was setting the fires in Franklin County.
A year I will always remember, it is just hard to believe that it was 30 years ago, and I am only 25, LOL.

That is Truck 53, T43 did not respond and by now they had the Sutphen.
LOL, wow..25..huh...Not to make you feel old pal, but I was 5 when this fire occured..
I remember Dad saying about this fire it was a good start to his 19th birthday. Cressler
