125-Year Old Conestoga Wagon And Other Equipment Lost In Fire

On October 21, 1980 at 5:50 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to Newburg R. D. 1 for a barn fire. A fire that started in the haymow destroyed a 40 X 70 foot barn. Lost in the fire were a 125-year-old Conestoga wagon, elevator, hay wagon, two calves and other machinery. Firefighters were able to save the silo, three outbuildings and the house. Almost 100 firefighters from four companies battled the blaze. Damages were estimated at $67,000. The Vigilant Hose and West End Fire and Rescue companies assisted at the scene.

Okay, I thought about this one for some time and today is when I make the request. Very few people leave comments on this site and I can't force you to comment but what I can do is change the way you comment if need be. This is not the whacker fest central pa fire I have a mangina site. This is my Shippensburg Fire site. I hate anonymous postings, I am not referring to you that leave a name or close to it, I know who you are and you are not hiding anything. I mean the ones that are just plain anonymous, if you want to comment have balls, be proud, don't hide behind a skirt, if that is what you want to do then stay at the central whacker fest site with the rest of the firefighters on the net only. Yes I have been ragging for some time and it shows here, but that is also the way I feel. Four years, three months and 28 days until I get released from the mental institution I call work.

I will have to agree with Brad. If you want to voice yourself than put your name to it. I use the screen name Sparky and most people know me. Those that don't, I am Dave Myers from the Vigilant Hose CO.52 of Shippensburg. Thanks for the great job Brad. Keep up the good job.

You were one that use a name that we all know Sparky. Along with CW, TM, Wagon master, TJ, we all know these people. It is the just plain blank anonymous I am referring to.

Brad, sounds like you need to go on another vac. When are you coming down to Ship? I think that Nov 15th would be a good day to visit. We are putting up the X-mas light. I know I know its not Thanksgiving yet. Beside we need a closet engine man to help put up the letters. Oh, if you do decide to come down bring a dish for lunch.

It was the vacation that gave me a chance to reflect and realize that I really no longer like my job. I thought about the wasteful spending, poor management, declining quality of firefighter and all the bullshit of the fire service. If firefighters today could fight fire the way they run their mouths the service would be so much better. This machine I am typing on is one of the problems in today's fire service.

I checked my calendar and the only thing on the 15th is a home Bears game. But let me see if I understand this right, you want me to drive in excess of 60 miles round trip, work to put up lights but I need to supply my own food, are you sure you havn't been promoted to Lt. or higher? Just kidding, maybe I will come and take a few photos.

I may show up in town a day next week, if I am coming I will call you.

Brad,
Diddo to what WMIT said. Feel free to give me a shout when you come and, if nothing else, we'll see if we can line up the new buggy for pics.

You're starting to sound like a disgruntled old truckie! (Trust me, I have one that drives me every 4th day, so I know disgruntled old truckies!) Hopefully a new Bears season is just the ticket to bring some new glimmer of hope to ya! My new wife and I would be interested in getting together with ya @ a game if you know of any extra tix. Let me know.

TJ

PS This may sound stupid, but I would log in so it doesn't come up anonymous but I can never figure out how to get logged in. I'll have to get with WMIT so he can show me again. Or.....maybe I'm just a little lazy. Hey, I'm only a truckman! Sleep til your hungry, eat til you sleep!

OK Son;

Deep breath. Smile and think of your happy place. In my entire career, I always said that anyone could be an officer, if it weren't for the people they have to deal with. Those few in this service who tend to have no balls, are always the ones to bitch or complain. I have always attributed it to the "little man's" syndrome. Always remember this: those that need to remain anon will never be the ones that you can count on for anything.
I have always tried to conduct myself in a manner that if I had something to say, I said it. What good is saying something if noone knows who to attribute it to.
As for me, keep up the good work. I visit as often as I can, and will keep signing the anonymous comments so you know that Dad is still keeping track of you.

TJ no need to sign in unless you would want to, your post are signed. Just like the others that commented today, you are all regulars, sign a name and do not hide, you all know it is not directed towards you.

I am thinking of coming up on Friday since the weather looks good with blue skies, a great day to take a few photographs.

Okay Dad took a few deep breaths, it didn't help, but the lager did. I guess that is my problem, if I have something to say, I say it also. People always think I am giving them help, I am not it is the truth and they just think it is hell. Isn't it time for you to visit soon? What do we need a big fire to get you here.

Glad the lager helped son. Would love to get in as soon as possible, but they just keep burning the world down out here. Can't seem to find enough time just to sit down.
I know you are frustrated with todays fire service. People always look at me funny when I talk about "the good times." But I think there is something to be said for maybe a return to the way it was and the way it could be again. Todays FF's are too self centered and always out for themselves. Need to change if the fire service is to continue to progress. Will get off the crate now. Am heading to another one north of Minneapolis. Be careful and I will let everyone know as soon as I do when I will be getting home. Be careful out there guys.
